INTRODUCTION:

Wetherby Senior School, an independent institution for boys aged 11 to 18 in Marylebone, London, is part of the Alpha Plus Education Group and a member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools. Originally established in 1951 as a pre-preparatory school for boys aged 4-8, it expanded in 2004 to allow students to remain until age 13. Known for its progressive education, the school emphasizes curiosity, independence, and self-reliance, aiming to prepare students for the challenges of British life and foster personal and academic growth.

The school provides a comprehensive curriculum for Year 7, including subjects like English, Mathematics, Sciences, History, and more, all supported by excellent resources and strong pastoral care. A key aspect of Wetherby Senior's educational approach is the Growth Mindset philosophy, which encourages students to develop self-awareness and continuously improve their abilities. The school also offers a variety of academic and co-curricular trips, and regularly hosts guest speakers as part of its PSHE program.

ADMISSION GUIDELINES:

Open Days provide parents a unique chance to engage with the school's staff and explore the campus in a way that's not possible during regular school days. The event begins with a presentation from the Head, followed by a pupil-led tour, and ends with refreshments and informal meetings with other staff members. Similarly, Visitor Mornings allow families to meet the Head and tour the school's facilities.

Oversubscription Criteria:

There are no oversubscription criteria for the school.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Wetherby Senior School offers around 54 places for boys entering Year 7 (11+ entry) each year. The school also has a Year 9 (13+ entry) option, but you must choose between the two when applying. Before applying, it's recommended to visit the school during their open events, such as visitor mornings held on Wednesdays or the larger open day on Saturday, 7th October 2023. To apply for Year 7, you must complete an online registration by midday on Friday, 13th October 2023, with a fee of £150. Registered applicants will take an online assessment in November, usually at their current school.

Shortlisted candidates from the assessment will be invited to an interview at Wetherby Senior School on Saturday, 13th January 2024, where the school will assess both intellectual and personal qualities. Offers will be made based on the assessment, interview, and references from the current school. Offer letters will be sent on Wednesday, 31st January 2024, and responses are required by midday on Friday, 2nd March 2024, if you wish to accept a place.

Part 2

·        Creative Comprehension (25 minutes)

PREPARATION AND TARGET TEST SCORES:

To prepare for Wetherby’s 11+ entry exams, it's essential to build a strong foundation of Year 5 content before jumping into practice papers. A "little and often" approach is recommended, with study sessions lasting no more than 30 minutes to maintain motivation. Encourage regular, varied reading to enhance vocabulary and analytical skills, while fostering intellectual curiosity through discussions, exposure to current events, and cultural experiences like museum visits. Once confident with the material, practice tests can help refine exam techniques and identify areas for improvement. Finally, celebrate progress regularly, focusing on effort as much as achievement to build resilience and confidence.

Consistently scoring 80% or higher on the 11+ practice tests is a strong indicator that a pupil is likely on track to pass the Wetherby Senior School 11+ exam. Although this doesn't guarantee success, historically, it has been a reliable sign that a student should perform well in the test.
